Using a Home Test Kit for Protein in Urine
Overview
Your doctor may have you check the amount of protein in your urine at home. Increased protein is a sign that your kidneys are being damaged.
To test your urine each day, use a simple test kit that contains a urine testing strip that you dip into a fresh sample of your urine. Follow the instructions on the kit. Find the results by matching the color of the strip to color blocks on the container.
You can buy urine testing strips at most pharmacies and drugstores. Many insurance companies will cover or reduce the cost of the strips if you have a prescription.
Write down your results in a notebook or log, along with your blood pressure and whether swelling (edema) is present. Notify your health professional of your results as often as needed. You can also take your notebook and results with you to each doctor's visit.
