Schizophrenia: Warning Signs of Violence

Overview

When a loved one has schizophrenia, some people may worry about the person becoming violent. Schizophrenia alone rarely leads to violence.

While threats and outbursts are more common, serious harm is rare. But there are some signs that a person is at a high risk of becoming violent. These signs include:

  • Substance use disorder. A person drinks alcohol more often or uses drugs.
  • Paranoia. A person has increased fears of other people.
  • Hallucinations that tell a person what to do. For example, a person may say they hear voices telling them to hurt or kill another person.
  • Stopping prescribed medicine. This can make symptoms worse and increase the risk of aggressive behavior.

Most people with schizophrenia aren't violent. But if violence is likely, they need help. Getting help is a way to protect the person or those around them.
