Acute HIV infection

Acute HIV infection is the first stage of infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Symptoms of HIV infection are similar to the flu (such as headache, nausea, diarrhea, and body aches) and go away on their own within weeks.

Even though symptoms may disappear, a person is still infected with HIV and can spread the infection. Getting treated early can keep the person healthy and can prevent AIDS. It can also keep the person from passing the virus to others.
