Early-onset isolated dystonia

Early-onset isolated dystonia is a rare disease that causes sustained, twisting spasms. These spasms may only affect one limb at first but often spread to other limbs and the midsection.

Early-onset isolated dystonia is usually diagnosed in childhood. After it is diagnosed, it often progresses. The condition does not affect intellectual capacity.

Treatment of early-onset isolated dystonia includes medicines and injections with botulinum toxin (such as Botox). Sometimes deep brain stimulation surgery is done. Support groups and counseling can be helpful for people with early-onset isolated dystonia and for their families. Genetic testing is available to identify carriers of the disease and help guide decisions about having children.
