THP Rx Specialty Drugs
Specialty medications treat complex, chronic conditions and/or rare diseases. They may have specific handling, administration and/or monitoring. Specialty medications may be injected, infused or taken by mouth. Specialty medications are often expensive treatments. Some specialty medications, known as limited distribution drugs, can only be dispensed by a few specialty pharmacies.
THP requires prior authorization for all specialty medications. Some medications require step-therapy, which means that you need to try other medications first. THP limits all specialty medications to a 30-day supply per fill.
THP has developed a network of specialty pharmacies that your plan may require you to use. The specialty pharmacies in our network provide excellent patient care, can help you manage side effects and find patient copay assistance. The specialty pharmacy will deliver your medication to you at the place and time that works best for you. Upon approval of a specialty drug, THP will notify you and your doctor of the specialty pharmacy to use. Call the number on your ID card or 1.800.624.6961, ext. 7914 for more information.
THP has a site of care guideline, which lists certain medications which may be appropriate for home infusion. For some specialty drugs administered in the hospital outpatient setting, it may be less costly for you to have the drug to be shipped directly from a network specialty pharmacy to the infusion site, this is known as white-bagging.
