Product Recall - Pedicare

Print

As of May 28, 2010, Blacksmith Brands, Inc. in conjunction with the FDA, is voluntarily recalling all lots of four children’s products in the PediaCare line. These products were manufactured by the McNeil plant that has also recently recalled Children’s/Infant’s Motrin, Tylenol, Zyrtec and Benadryl due to some products containing higher concentrations, containing inactive ingredients that may not meet internal testing requirements, and others containing tiny particles.

The four PediaCare items involved in the recall are:

  • PediaCare Multi-Symptom Cold 4oz UPC# 30045-0556-059
  • PediaCare Long Acting Cough 4oz UPC# 30045-0465-047
  • PediaCare Decongestant 4oz UPC# 30045-0554-048
  • PediaCare Allergy and Cold 4oz UPC#30045-0552-044

Although this recall was not initiated as a result of adverse events or customer complaints, parents/caregivers should not give these recalled products to children. Contact your health care provider or pharmacist for an alternative medication if you are unsure. Also, Blacksmith Brands is offering a coupon for a replacement product when the product becomes available again by call 1.888.473.3099. You will need the NDC number (located above the brand name on the bottle) and the Lot number (located vertically on the label of the PediaCare). And any adverse reactions may be reported to the FDA by fax at 1.800.FDA.0178, by mail at MedWatch, FDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787 or on the MedWatch website at www.fda.gov/medwatch.

How should one dispose of their recalled medications? It is not recommended to dispose of any medications by flushing them down the toilet or pouring them down the sink or storm drain due to potentially harmful effects to the environment and our water systems. Some communities and pharmacies have take-back programs that will dispose of these medications for you. Contact your local pharmacy or community authority to see if these programs are available in your area. In the event that medicines can not be disposed by take-back programs, place them in the household trash taking the following steps. Make sure that they are in a sealable plastic bag or container; ensuring that children, pets, and others do not have access to the contents of the container. The medication can be mixed with cat litter, sawdust, coffee grounds or any other substance that makes it less appealing to pets and children. Dispose of the container in household trash. You can visit www.smarxtdisposal.net for more information regarding how to dispose of unused medications.
